God's Calling is an Adventure

When I was a small boy, I wanted to be like Indiana Jones. I mean, let's face it; every boy wanted to be like Indiana Jones or like Luke Skywalker. I wanted to be called or randomly thrown into an adventure. I wanted to know what it was like to be fearless, to be courageous. As a boy, I dreamt of big adventures of saving the damsel in distress or finding a long lost treasure. Or have an uncle who I never met mysteriously show up and tell me I have powers, and I am needed to save the world. In his book Wild and Heart (I recommend this book), the author John Eldredge says, "Deep in his heart, every man longs for a battle to fight, an adventure to live, and a beauty to rescue." This embodies how I felt as a child; I was drawn to the adventure of what could be!
Unfortunately, these dreams of adventures get quickly squashed as you grow, and the world tells you how to live your life. But the desire for it will always be there, and I believe that the desire for adventure lives with everyone.
I titled this Gods Calling is an Adventure because as I look back at my faith journey, it has been a great adventure, full of victories and triumphs, sorrow and defeat. When we think of great adventures, we often only see the outcome; we forget what it took to get to the end of the story. We forget the death, brokenness, tragedy; we also forget who helped the hero achieve this victory—the sidekicks, close friends, family, and sometimes enemies. It was Sam who took Frodo to the mountain to destroy the ring (Lord of the rings). Sometimes we need to lean on someone to help us on our adventure. I feel like this parallels perfectly with my faith journey.
As a young adult, I remember reading the book blue like jazz by Donald Millar. That book, alongside wild at heart, opened my eyes not only to how God viewed me but how I viewed Him. I remember thinking during that time that what God was doing was leading me on a big expedition; I was on an adventure. But it was more like Indiana Jones extending his hand to invite me on his adventure, not mine. I was joining in on an expedition that had already been started. This adventure was God's, and I got to come along for the ride! As I look back, that was the moment when I said I will follow you anywhere!
I think that some can forget that when God calls us to Him, He is inviting us to join in on what He's doing, He is inviting us to join His adventure. I know that sometimes I try and make it my own and try to correct God by saying, "God, that's not right, or that's not where we should go." But in the end, God is the one with the map and knows the roads that we need to walk down. Gods calling is the true adventure; if I take a look at my short faith journey, I have come across trouble, heartache, death, victories, abundance, and relationships. This journey that God has me on is exciting; it's an adventure to find who I am in Christ. And as I go along this trail, I am to help others see the truth of this, that God's calling is an adventure!
